Indian Cultural Week

Indian Cultural Week

The Winterline Centre for the Arts has brought great honor to the school as well and taught many people a lot of things by helping set up the amazing exhibitions. They consisted of dying, block printing, making hand dyed cloth into rolls of string, making handmade shawls and hand stitching. This experience took me back in time, because when I saw the spinning wheel, I felt that I was looking at Gandhi Ji and went, “Whoa! This is out of this world .” And amazingly I realized how Rich the history if India is. My favorite part of the exhibition was looking at all the machines and actually understanding how they worked and how complicated they were.

Then we got to see a famous Orissi dancer called Diya Sen who has performed many places in the world, including Woodstock School! We the 6th graders were lucky enough to have two classes with her. In them, we learned many different things such as what hand sign means what different thing. We learned how the Orissi dancing is actually done. We learned the history of the dance as well as performing (in front of our class) some skits using the hand gestures that we were taught. When we saw the dancer performing in front of our eyes, we understood a lot of the dance because we knew what she meant. Thanks to the Winterline Centre for the Arts, we were lucky enough to get such an experience!

Religion

Religion means the service and worship of God or the Supernatural. To me it means good behavior and a peaceful life. I think that religion is a very important aspect of life. It is about your beliefs and what you learn from its morals. This essay talks about this topic and many more.

There are many religions in the world. Some of them are Christianity, Buddhism, Islamic (or Muslim), Hindu, Sikh and Judaism. These are the main ones that are spread out all across the world. Hinduism is a body of religious beliefs and practices native to India. The Hindus follow about 20-25000 Gods. Christianity is the religion derived from Jesus Christ, based on the bible as sacred scriptures, professed by Christians and is a very famous one all over the nations. Muslim is an adherent of the the religion founded the the Arab prophet Muhammad. They have an of Heaven and Hell. They call it Jahnem (heaven) and Bahest (hell). Sikh is an Indian religion marked by rejection of caste. Judaism was developed by the ancient Hebrews. Egyptians don't have a name for their religion but they do have many Gods and have a belief of after and before life. Agnosticism is a good belief according to me. It is when an ultimate reality is unknown and probably unknowable. Atheists are are people that don't believe in God.

Different cultures had different Gods until the Jews said that reality is basically one. These people were the first monists. All cultures have different divine activities, songs, ceremonies and rituals. A religious ceremony is an act or a series of acts prescribed by rituals. One ceremony that I know of well is baptism. “It is a Christian sacrament marked by ritual use of water and admitting the recipient to the Christian community.”

Many people meditate because it is proven that it helps you calm down and relax. Meditation is a discourse intended to express it's author's feelings or reflections to guide others in contemplation. A person well known for this is Buddha. He meditated for 6 or 7 years. A very long time.

Devotion is an act of prayer or private worship. I think if you believe in something bigger than you, then you should devote your life to the supernaturals' works that are said by it. People have created many songs and hymns. A sacred song or hymn is a song of praise or worship to God. There are many holy books in the world. A holy book is something that yields knowledge. A temple is a building for religious practice. There are many holy building like the church, temple, gurudwaras and mosques. A priest can almost always be found in one of these sacred places. A priest is one authorized to perform rites of religion.

Oppression is a common thread in religion. It means an unjust or cruel exercise of power or authority. I think that people in the world have the right to choose whether or not to choose the same religion as someone else. Rights have to be applied to religion whatsoever. I've heard people say that they are holy, peacemakers, but what is peace if you torture people?!

Festivals are a celebration in a day or a period of time. In religion it is a series of cultural beliefs and happiness. The Hindus have about 50 festivals over their calendar. Christians have three main festive days – Christmas, Good Friday and Easter. In the Muslim community they have a main festival called Eid.

I am a believer of Christ. I think it's right. Who do you follow? Have you thought why? Think about this essay, it may help you change. No one is perfect. You could have a good rested – peaceful life.

Activity Week

Activity Week

Activity Week!!! Activity week is a time away from school and dorms for activities. It was great getting ready for the fresh week, away from normal life. The e-mail had arrived from Dr Wood. All the bags are out. Clothes were all over the place. Everyone was rushing to see the e-mail. It was fun looking at the excited faces of all grades, especially 5th graders.

The Ganges. When I first saw the Ganges, I was really disappointed about all the misuse that has been done by everyone. They make the animals poo and pee in the water. Some people put chemicals in the water. Another way of misuse. The Ganges is used for for a dam in Chilla. The dam provides electricity to various parts in North India. This river is used for farming, animals, bathing and other religious uses. This is a very holy river for the Hindus. The Hindus use this river for their Aartis and Holy bathing etc. The river is a recreational place in NE India. The Ganges flows all the way into the bay of Bengal, shared by Bangladesh. My experience of the Ganges was great except for the misuse that had been done to it.

Religious Notifications. Going to the Hindu Temples was a very new and fresh experience for all the people who have never experienced something like this. The fist time we went to a temple in Rishikesh, there was a guy dressed as Hanuman, the monkey God, giving tikas to almost everyone. Outside each of the temples, you could here the pundits' chants. On the visit to see the Aarti, we met a guy in the dark, only the bottom of his face lit, him looking like a ghost, looking like he's going to kill us, was scary. I tried not to look at him but it kept coming back to me. Freaky, HUH???

Our visit to the Gujjars and about them. The last few days before Activity Week, one of the groups researched about the Gujjars. Some of their information was proved wrong and some right. When we went to Rishikesh, our main objective was to buy gifts for the Gujjars. When we actually went there, we saw that they seemed happy with what they have. They really appreciated education. From 6th grade and onwards, they have to cycle 5km to school but they still appreciated education, making me feel happy for them. At first thought, I thought they would be very poor but they didn't seem too poor. They didn't care about their simple life which I still and will always appreciate. I noticed these things in their campus/area: Mud houses, branch and leaf roof, wood cooking system, oil lamp, no bedding. These people are vegetarians and they use animals like cows, buffaloes and chickens. Their main business is milking.

So, I have mostly told you about my experience in all of the topics above, but I'll tell you more.

On the first day I had lots of fun scouting and having a little dip in the Ganges. As we came back from the “Scouting” experience, all of the girls were super cranky, especially to us. That day we had been to Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology. We had gotten Domino's pizza for lunch that day, and I got 2 discount coupon. That day had turned into a “settle in, lay back and relax” day.

On the second day we went on a morning walk on a animal search. In the day we went to Rishikesh to buy gifts for the Gujjars. We went on the Ram-Jhula bridge and the Lakshman-Jhula bridge. We took a boat ride across the Ganges. I collected in more than 600 ml of Ganga Water for free. We had gone to Chotiwalas for lunch. I had Cholla Bhatura for lunch. Today I had my first Night Safari.

Day three review. On day three we went to the Gujjars (you can read about it in paragraph 4). Since day 2, we had started to go on morning scouts. A daily routine. We also visited a dam right in front of our rest house.

Day 4. We went to Haridwar on the trolleys to a temple. In each and every temple I could smell the flowery smell of incense. In that temple I donated 10 and got a Hindu Braislet on my right hand. In that temple, there were small buildings (all religious). In one of them there was a man with this bat kind of thing. I got hit thrice on my back “religiously.” We went for a good dip again. When we came back, only the huts had showering water, so we had to shower there. That night we went to see the Aarti (you can read more about it in paragraph 3). We had a bonfire night with many skits and stories. Great fun!

Day 5. That day was our trip to home. We had lunch at Mc Donalds. After we reached, someone had vomited on two people's bag's. Even so it was great to be home.

Even though Activity Week is a great time, you always want to come back to home. It happens to all of us, the same old, GREAT feeling!!! I'll be missing the great activity week that we had, away from the hills and into the plains...

Nature Trail

Nature Trail

For the past 4 months, the grade 5A (us) have been going to the Fleming Nature Trail. This trail has and is going to be a big part of their curriculum. This project is to observe the nature there and and learn more about the trail.

This trail has been around for 59 years. It was donated by the Century class of 1951. This trail is a oak and rhododendron grove with spots of Deodadar. It is a great trail with more than a billion things to look for. This trail has developed over the years making the trail more beautifully interesting. As it changes over the seasons, it makes itself more attractive. In this paper, I am going to tell you about it even more.

When we went to the trail for the first few times in August we notice that the climate was noticed that the climate was very wet – representing Monsoon. That month the plants and trees were green and many-many ferns were on the trees and all around. This whole month (almost) was full of clouds – rain clouds.

In September, the conditions were mostly big hints of Monsoon - but this time, the rain came down in torrents. The weather was mostly warm because this month is closer to the summer. It did get a bit cool at times, but not much... This month the trees and plants got exceptionally green.

The third month of observing was a totally new experience. The climate was a dry & sunny type. This month had one sudden burst of rain. Leaves had started to fall and decay. This trail is very attractive because of its flowers. These flowers were mostly growing on steep grassy and areas which have direct sunlight. These flowers were the tall big ones (I don't know much about them!).

This month (November) has changed its weather by a whole lot. It has turned the air temperature higher by a like a million times. From the start to now there have only been 2 times when it has precipitated. The first time it had been in the form of a storm with hail. The second time it was a light drizzle, right the next day after the storm. I wonder how things are up on the trail... The last time we went to take a walk to the trail, we (well, me...) saw many, many leaves on the floor starting to decompose because of the direct sunlight. This month the flowers were totally gone...

This place is a home. A home for wildlife... In each of the months, the wildlife has changed. In August, we saw three things. Those were: Spiders, Leeches, and lady bugs. People and books and thing say that there have been more than three things but we (sadly) only saw three things...

In September we saw four creatures. They were: Caterpillars, Spiders, Moths and Lady Bugs. Throughout the four months of observation the wildlife has either increased or decreased. Even though I haven't talked about the 3rd and 4th months this is right.

In October, we noticed five different insects. They were: Crickets, Grasshoppers, Butterflies, Worms, Salamander. There is a secret to finding birds and animals in any place in the world. That secret is: Keep your eyes and ears open, mouth shut!

Anyway, in November, the weather was dry with only two rains (as I told you) making me get feeling that there would be less insects. I was actually proved wrong, because we saw five different types of insects (some of them many times). They were: Lizards, Spiders, Butterflies, Ants and Flies. After the rain there will probably be less insects on the trail.

So I have mostly talked to you about the plant life but not all. Many leaves have now gotten bite marks and were starting to turn transparent. It was not exactly transparent but it was like a web. It had lost its main fibers. I had asked Mr V about it and he said that this could be because of the winds – sometimes cold sometimes hot very quickly. I think this is because of microbes. The Ferns... The ferns have been an interesting part of the Fleming Nature Trail and Mussoorie. In early Monsoon, the small ferns had started to bloom. By late Monsoon the ferns were looking very green and healthy. Starting of fall there were still many ferns everywhere but they were starting to go brown. In mid-November, most of the ferns were on the ground, decaying or decomposing. The good thing is that one type of fern called the Christmas fern has stayed alive and it is going to till Christmas. These ferns were mostly in the shady areas making themselves adapt to the cold weather. I've noticed that the Pine Trees have been only been seen in the direct sunlight. These trees had gotten company by the Sunflowers.

Unbelievably, throughout the four months, I've noticed three adaptions. First: was evidence of a habitat. That proves that the creatures that live there have adapted to the conditions of the area. Second are the Christmas ferns. Third are the vines creeping upon the trees – “adapting” to the climate. These vines were not there in the Monsoon.

Now I am going to tell you about the one connection that I noticed. I noticed that after the soil turned sandy and the weather turned dry, the ants finally started to come out and show themselves.

As we all know, everything has to have an end, and so does this paper. There are more things to happen, more things to tell. But as all endings end... This is:

The End
